In their first preparatory friendly for Euro 2024, the Netherlands displayed their strength by thrashing Canada 4-0 this Thursday at Feyenoord Stadium. The hosts broke through the Canadian defense after a goalless first half, scoring four times in the second period. The goals came from Memphis Depay, Jeremie Frimpong, Wout Weghorst, and Virgil Van Dijk.
The Netherlands will return to the field next Monday, June 10, against Iceland for their last test before Euro 2024. This friendly will also take place at Feyenoord’s home ground. The Orange team, which is in Group D of the tournament, will start their campaign on June 16 against Poland at 10 AM (Brasília time). Austria and France are also in the same group.
Match Overview
In the first half, the Netherlands controlled the game against Canada but failed to score. The European team created several dangerous opportunities. However, Frimpong and Brobbey were thwarted by blocks from defender Cornelius and saves from goalkeeper St. Clair. The Canadians maintained a defensive stance for almost the entire half. Still, they managed a scare towards the end when Larin shot close to the goal but missed wide. The goals, therefore, were reserved for the final 45 minutes.
Just 4 minutes into the second half, the Netherlands finally opened the scoring. Frimpong crossed from the right, and Depay was unmarked in the area to finish with his left foot: 1-0. Six minutes later, the second goal of the game occurred. Frimpong received a long pass, advanced down the right, attempted a cross, and hit Davies. On the rebound, the number 12 of the Dutch team struck with his left foot: 2-0.
At the 18-minute mark, the hosts added another goal. Schouten took a shot, goalkeeper St. Clair parried, and Weghorst, who had just come on, finished from close range to make it 3-0. It was the Dutch striker’s first touch of the ball. The European team did not stop there.
